Ali Khataw Receives Community Leadership Award from UT

May 11, 2011

Encotech President Ali Khataw was honored Wednesday by The University of Texas at Austin’s Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at the first annual Community Leadership Awards Ceremony. Dr. Gregory Vincent, Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement at UT Austin, led the event which took place at the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center on the UT Campus.

Mr. Khataw was one of three recipients of the Community Leadership Circle Award, which recognizes individuals who have contributed to building stronger communities and forging new paths for Asians in Texas. In his acceptance speech, Mr. Khataw recognized those who have encouraged him throughout his life and also made a call to action for members of the Asian community to make a positive impact on the world around them. “We as Asians tend to stay on the sidelines and are passive towards community engagement. With Austin’s Asian population at 6.3% and with predictions that the Asian community will become the second largest minority community by 2015, it is imperative that the Asian community gets involved and participates in their civic duty,” Mr. Khataw said.

Mr. Khataw currently serves on seven boards and commissions and is the Chair of the Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce.
