Northern Walnut Creek Bike Trail

Austin, Texas

Northern Walnut Creek Bike Trail is the western section of a proposed sequence of bike trail improvements that will extend east from Austin to Manor. The trail is 3.2 miles long connecting Balcones District Park with Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park.

Encotech self-performed all Civil-Structural tasks. Encotech designed eleven bridges of various types; cast-in-place concrete, precast concrete & pre-engineered steel. ADA and tree protection requirements necessitated several hundred feet of retaining wall of various heights and types. Most of the retaining wall designed was reinforced concrete cantilever and included small sections of limestone masonry gravity retaining wall. The existing soil and hydraulic conditions vary along the length of the trail’s alignment which required variation in the foundation design for both bridge abutments and retaining walls. Longer bridge spans are supported on reinforced concrete drilled shafts and small spans are supported on engineered subgrade.

Walnut Creek is a physical nexus of many of the City of Austin and State of Texas environmental/cultural protection safeguards. Encotech managed interactions with the TxDot, TCEQ and USACOE to satisfy archeological, water quality and waterway construction regulations. Encotech guided the Design Team’s modification to the prior City of Austin Construction Documents to bring them into compliance with contemporary environmental requirements. Encotech also coordinated updated code compliance with the City of Austin and AASHTO standards that motivated bridge width changes, alignment adjustments and greater diversity in the types/locations of bridges.
