Encotech provided electrical engineering services for the Housing Authority of the City of Austin’s (HACA) Lakeside Apartments. The structure was built in 1967 and in 2012 an electrical shortage caused concern for the stability of the building’s electrical system.
Encotech was retained to develop a report of findings after performing a full assessment of the main electrical system and switchboard. To test the system, Encotech was required to assure that no circuits be down for more than 20 minutes. The report offered three recommended options, design drawings and probable costs.
The first option and most immediate solution, was to replace all the existing switchgear and service feeders that were associated with the electrical shortage. Option two included option one services plus a 50 percent increase in electrical load capacity in order to add HVAC systems for the entire building. The third recommendation included the complete replacement of all distribution and residential electrical panels.
Due to budgetary constraints, HACA decided to go with option one. The project went out to bid in 2013.
